Anemone’s work has always been deeply connected to textiles, reuse, and the stories embedded in old materials. We were excited to bring her into The Cut & Sew Show and see how she would bring that sensibility to the chore coat.
“I have been inspired by old textiles, upcycling, and sustainability for as long as I can remember - my father owned a bed & breakfast in southern Vermont for 20 years out of our 1890s Victorian house, and we spent many hours together at auctions, thrift, and antique stores searching for pieces to fill our home. Subsequently, when the textiles in our home reached the point of irreparability, they were repurposed into utilitarian items, be that into cleaning rags, curtains, pillows, or picnic blankets. I love the circularity of working with antique/vintage quilts in particular: many were pieced together from worn out clothing or feedsacks - whatever the household had on-hand. Through my practice, I work around the damaged areas of quilts to make them whole once again, as garments intended to be worn and loved for generations to come.” - Ashley Saville (aka ANEMONE)
The Cut & Sew Show brings together some of the most exciting independent artists and designers working today, each given the same unfinished chore coat to reimagine through their own creative practice.
Presented by Shelter Cultivation Project in partnership with April Cornell, the exhibition explores the intersection of art, fashion, design, textiles, and making. Each artist brings their own materials, techniques, and creative language to the garment, resulting in a collection of one-of-a-kind works.
