FSP OUTDOORS

Blaire Kemp of FSP Outdoors is a dear friend, and I've had the great opportunity to work with her many times over the years. I always enjoy seeing where her creativity takes a project, and this one is a perfect example. I love a good design experiment, especially when it starts with a simple question: what else could this thing do? Blaire took the name chore coat and ran with it, imagining a second life for the garment beyond getting work done. Inspired by the makeshift seats ski tourers use when they stop in the mountains, she set out to transform the coat into a portable place to sit and relax. The result is an experiment in mobile seating, and a pretty unexpected take on what a chore coat can be.

I wanted to turn the jacket into a multi use piece. With the name CHORE coat I figured what better second use than relaxation. I’ve seen these nylon contraptions people suspend on their skis stuck in the snow to use as chairs when they are ski touring. I figured I could find a way to do the same thing and turn the chore coat into a relaxation coat. An experiment in mobile seating. - FSP Outdoors

The Cut & Sew Show brings together some of the most exciting independent artists and designers working today, each given the same unfinished chore coat to reimagine through their own creative practice.

Presented by Shelter Cultivation Project in partnership with April Cornell, the exhibition explores the intersection of art, fashion, design, textiles, and making. Each artist brings their own materials, techniques, and creative language to the garment, resulting in a collection of one-of-a-kind works.
