She took the original chore coat apart and painstakingly reconstructed it by hand using the Korean Ssamsol technique, combining fabric scraps from her own sewing life with pieces of the original garment. Held together with temporary basting thread, the coat is an exact replica that is never meant to be permanent. It’s a beautiful and fragile meditation on making, memory, and the things we do to hold our lives together.

No new material was purchased. I took the chore coat that was given to me and took it all apart. Traced off all the pieces and then began to put it back together all by hand, all using the Ssamsol technique. Women in Korea would sew fabric scraps together to make wrapping cloths, bojagi. It doesn’t make sense for clothes: too big, too complicated, too delicate, too time consuming.

This is an exact replica. I also included pieces from the chore coat that was given to me. The person who sewed together the coat, their name and tag is still in there. They contributed too.

You think you have this life, but it can fall apart at any moment. It looks like it’s all real, like it’s all sturdily built together, but it’s temporary. You can try your best to keep it all together, but it can all fall apart at any moment. Life is precious and delicate and fragile. It is a series of decisions held together by your own effort, you can only do what you can do. Treat it gently, treat it carefully, and then maybe, just maybe, you can hold it together, it will remain whole.

Herrie Son

The Cut & Sew Show brings together some of the most exciting independent artists and designers working today, each given the same unfinished chore coat to reimagine through their own creative practice.

Presented by Shelter Cultivation Project in partnership with April Cornell, the exhibition explores the intersection of art, fashion, design, textiles, and making.
