I first knew Janie as the director of the Fleming Museum, where she curated some of my favorite exhibitions. I was thrilled when we finally had the opportunity to collaborate on an exhibition of our own. It was during that project, while visiting her studio, that I discovered another side of Janie's creative practice and realized we shared a deep appreciation for textiles and the stories they carry. Janie has an incredible ability to see the potential in old cloth and garments, drawing on her background as an art historian to give these materials new life. Having her take part in The Cut & Sew Show felt like a natural continuation of that connection.
The Cut & Sew Show brings together some of the most exciting independent artists and designers working today, each given the same unfinished chore coat to reimagine through their own creative practice.
Presented by Shelter Cultivation Project in partnership with April Cornell, the exhibition explores the intersection of art, fashion, design, textiles, and making. Each artist brings their own materials, techniques, and creative language to the garment, resulting in a collection of one-of-a-kind works.
